3rd Annual Historic Harlem Parks Film Festival Begins July 7th
the African Film Festival and the Historic Harlem Parks Coalition have joined forces this summer to present the 3rd Annual Historic Harlem Parks Film Festival: Through African Eyes. The festival features four free screenings of African films – one in each of the historic Harlem parks (Marcus Garvey, Jackie Robinson, St. Nicholas, and Morningside Parks). The festival hopes to encourage the public to become aware of and utilize the parks and park programming.
Each screening will be preceded by live music that originates from a variety of countries and reflects the abundant diversity of African culture. Music performances begin at 7:30pm, as people lay out their blankets and picnic fixings, and screenings begin at 8:30pm. There won't be any rain dates or venues.
Schedule of events:
Wednesday, July 7th at Marcus Garvey Park
The Amphitheater behind Pelham Fritz Recreation Ctr., Mt. Morris Park West &122nd St.
MUSIC: Les Merveilles de Guinea - Guinean Drummers and Dancers
FILM: MAPANTSULA (Oliver Schmitz, South Africa, 1988, 100 min.)
The first anti-apartheid feature film by, for, and about black South Africans was filmed inside Soweto and scored to the urban beat of "township jive." It tells the story of Panic (played by co-scriptwriter Thomas Mogotlane) a petty gangster caught up in the events of the student riots in Soweto and his transformation from irresponsible loner to someone compelled to take a stand. Called South Africa’s answer to The Harder They Come, the film gives viewers an insider's tour of township life and a taste of things to come in the vibrant popular cinema promised by the new, democratic South Africa.

At Ocularis: Le Cinema, C'est Moi - Langlois and the Cinematheque Francaise

Ocularis will be showing two documentaries that pay tribute to Henri Langlois, the legendary founder of the Cinematheque Francaise in Paris. Charismatic, brilliant, and temperamental, Langlois was an early champion of film preservation and established the film library and screening room that would influence generations of cinephiles and filmmakers including Jean-Luc Godard, Alain Resnais, Francois Truffaut, and Jacques Rivette. Citizen Langlois documents his remarkable career in interviews, film excerpts, and archival footage. In Langlois, the man himself leads a tour of Paris, his home, and the Cinematheque, with appearances by Catherine Deneuve, Lillian Gish, and others. Work Includes: Citizen Langlois, Edgardo Cozarinsky. 1995, 65 min., Langlois, Roberto Guerra and Eila Hershon. 1973, 60 min.
